Effect of Pre-Cooling the Injection Site on Pain Perception in Paediatric Dentistry

Abstract: Objective: To compare the mean Sound, Eye and Motor (SEM) score of pre cooling and topical application atinjection site in pediatric patients. Study Design: A quasi experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: Fatima Jinnah Dental College and Hospital, Karachi, from Sep to Dec 2017. Methodology: Sixty four paediatric patients aged between 8-12 who needed dental anaesthesia were randomlydivided into two groups A and B. Subjects in group A were applied topical anaesthesia at the injection s… Show more

“…The VAS facial expressions were shown to children prior to anesthetic injection for the purpose of acquaintance. 33 The MBPS as a behavioral scale assesses three behaviors of facial expression, cry, and body movements. 34 Immediately after the injection of the anesthetic agent, the children were requested to pick one of the VAS facial expressions that best described the level of pain they experienced during the anesthetic injection (Figure 1).…”

“…Both before and after therapy, patients assessed their fatigue levels using the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion Scale, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale [24][25][26]. Importantly, previous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of using these scales in children [27][28][29].…”

“…literature has shown encouraging results of cooling tissue before procedure. 7 Some dental studies also used this cooling technique to evaluate its efficacy in reducing the pain of local anesthesia injection administration. Harbert et al in 1989 evaluated that precooling of palatal area before injection reduced pain perception… Kosaraju et al compared refrigerant and two minutes application of topical anesthesia gel (20% benzocaine gel) in the posterior palatal area before injection.…”
