Effect of Pre-Exercise Music on Bench Press Power, Velocity, and Repetition Volume

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of listening to pre-exercise music on bench press performance. We recruited 10 resistance trained males (M age= 22.8, SD = 5.8 years; M height= 173.7, SD = 8.3 cm; M body mass = 81.0, SD = 18.2 kg) for this crossover counterbalanced research design. Participants completed two bench press exercise trials of (a) No music (NM), and (b) Pre-exercise music (PreExM) separated by at least 48 hours. For each trial, following a warm-up, participants listened to music… Show more

“…Music preference has been shown to repeatedly mediate music benefits while responding to and performing exercise. For the context of discussion in this review, this has been shown in endurance [ 8 , 9 ], anaerobic sprint [ 16 ], and resistance exercise modes [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Various timing strategies (i.e., during exercise, pre-exercise, warm-up, etc.)…”

“…RPE was unaffected by preference. Still, my group has also shown similar performance enhancement with preferred pre-task music during resistance exercise [ 13 ]. Participants completed explosive bench press repetitions to failure at 75% of 1-RM while listening to self-selected preferred music or no music immediately prior to giving effort.…”

“…Music preference unequivocally influences the efficacy of the ergogenic potential of music [1,[8][9][10][11][12][13]. Nakamura et al reported increases in endurance cycling performance and dissociation while listening to preferred (Pref) music compared to non-preferred (Non-pref) [14].…”

“…Following the warm-up, the barbell weight was progressively increased by 2.5–20.0 kg for one attempt until the participant could not complete the concentric phase of the bench press. The 1-RM load was determined within four attempts with a rest period of three to five minutes between attempts [ 19 , 20 ]. Following this, familiarization with the protocol of lifting as explosively as possible was completed.…”
