Effect of prepubertal ovariohysterectomy on bone mineral density and bone mineral content in puppies

Abstract: In this study, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was performed on the calcaneus (CAL) and accessory carpal bone (ACB) of early-age neutered (n = 11) and sham-operated puppies (n = 10) to investigate changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) over time. Prepubertal ovariohysterectomy and sham surgery were performed at 10 weeks, while BMD and BMC were measured at 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks of age. BMD and BMC of CAL and ACB of ovariohysterectomised puppies were found to be higher. The… Show more

“…The surgeries were performed at 10 weeks of age under isoflurane (Isoflurane, Rhodia Organique Fine Ltd., UK) anaesthesia following premedication with atropine (0.04 mg/kg SQ, Atropin, Vetaş, Turkey) and carprofen (4 mg/kg SQ, Rimadyl, Pfizer, Belgium) in the same manner as previously described (Ekici et al, 2005). Group I consisted of 11 animals that were completely ovariohysterectomised using the technique described by Howe and Olson (2000), Group II consisted of 10 animals that were incompletely ovariohysterectomised, leaving the left ovary intact, and Group III consisted of 10 animals that had a sham surgery.…”

“…Ovariohysterectomy is the safest and most effective treatment for pyometra 11,12 and it is a radical treatment for postoestrus metritis when it recurs following failure of medical treatment and also that is, sterilisation, as many owners complain of the manifestations of heat with vulvular discharge, as well as the problems associated with repeated mattings 13 and finally, ovariohysterectomy is a tool used for combating pet overpopulation 14 .…”
