Effect of Pseudomonas moorei KB4 Cells’ Immobilisation on Their Degradation Potential and Tolerance towards Paracetamol

Abstract: Pseudomonas moorei KB4 is capable of degrading paracetamol, but high concentrations of this drug may cause an accumulation of toxic metabolites. It is known that immobilisation can have a protective effect on bacterial cells; therefore, the toxicity and degradation rate of paracetamol by the immobilised strain KB4 were assessed. Strain KB4 was immobilised on a plant sponge. A toxicity assessment was performed by measuring the concentration of ATP using the colony-forming unit (CFU) method. The kinetic paramete… Show more

“…Additionally, the degradation is influenced by many environmental factors such as pH, temperature, and heavy metals. Also, when degradation is mediated by immobilized cells of Pseudomonas moorei KB4, by this strain, the degradation rate is enhanced (Surma et al 2021 ).…”

“…Planococcus sp. S5, Bacillus thuringiensis B1(2015b), Pseudomonas moorei KB4, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia KB2 were immobilized separately through the adsorption on the surface of the loofah sponge, according to Dzionek et al [20], Dzionek et al [21], Surma et al [22], Wojcieszy ńska et al [23], respectively. The initial optical density of the cultures used during the immobilization of Planococcus sp.…”

“…In previous studies, the authors successfully immobilized strains capable of degrading selected NSAIDs on the plant sponge Luffa cylindrica and characterized their properties [20][21][22][23]. The choice of plant sponge from Loofah cylindrica was dictated by the fact that it is a cheap, biodegradable, and biocompatible material with a hydrophilic surface on which there are many functional groups.…”

“… Pseudomonas moorei , first isolated from Elbe river sediments in Germany, is notable for its ability to detoxify pharmaceutical industry environmental contaminants such as 4- and 5-chlorosalicylates, acetaminophen, and diclofenac ( 1 3 ), but nothing is known about the activities of these bacteria in pristine ecosystems. Two P. moorei strains were isolated from dune swale bog soils as part of a culture-dependent survey of bacteria within the Cape Cod National Seashore (42.070624 N, 70.210548 W and 42.064742 N, 70.117562 W) in early July 2012.…”
