Effect of Pulmonary Edema on Tracheal Diameter

Abstract: Background: Though it is well known that cardiogenic and noncardiogenic pulmonary edema can cause changes in lung mechanics, actual alterations in tracheal diameter have not been described. Objective: To evaluate the effects of pulmonary edema induced by increased left atrial pressure (cardiogenic) and Perilla ketone (PK; noncardiogenic) on tracheal diameter in chronically instrumented awake sheep. Methods: We investigated the effects of two mechanistically distinct types of pulmonary edema on tracheal diamete… Show more

“…28 Tracheal dimensions are affected in pulmonary edema and recurrent airway obstruction in sheep, humans, horses, and dogs. 30,[44][45][46][47] Pulmonary edema was induced in sheep by increased left atrial pressure and intravenous administration of Perilla ketone, resulting in statistically significant tracheal narrowing immediately cranial to the carina, possibly caused by reflex efferent vagal tone. 45 A change in normal tracheal diameter may also possibly be an early indicator of an imminent alveolar pattern in the dog.…”

“…As an Fig. b Follow-up CT after treatment shows regression of these signs a b aside, tracheal narrowing has also been described in sheep models of cardiogenic edema, and the degree of narrowing has been shown to correlate with the severity of pulmonary edema (Snapper et al 1999). CT obtained in a patient with congestive heart failure due to ischemia.…”
