Effect of purslane on blood lipids and glucose: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract: Despite a history of purslane usage as a herbal treatment for dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia management, existing evidence from clinical trials is controversial. The aim for the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of purslane supplementation on lipid parameters and glycemic status in adult populations. A systematic review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to January 15, 2018, searching for randomized controlled trials that assessed the impact of purslane on fasti… Show more

“…Similar to human studies, investigations on animal species revealed that propolis and its ingredient are safe and do not cause any toxic changes in the liver and kidneys (Celik & Erdogan, ; Jung et al, ; Türkez, Yousef, & Geyikoglu, ). Although propolis, like many alternative remedies, is generally better tolerated than synthetic medications (A. Hadi, Pourmasoumi, Najafgholizadeh, Kafeshani, & Sahebkar, ; Izzo, Hoon‐Kim, Radhakrishnan, & Williamson, ; Mansour‐Ghanaei, Hadi, Pourmasoumi, Joukar, Golpour, & Najafgholizadeh, ), several studies have suggested that propolis had the potential for allergic reactions in certain people. It might cause skin to redden or rashes to develop, itch, and swell.…”

“…Although the facts showed that herbal remedies are generally better tolerated than synthetic medications (Baghernya, Nobili, Blesso, & Sahebkar, ; Colalto, ; Hadi, Pourmasoumi, Najafgholizadeh, Kafeshani, & Sahebkar, ), there is a lack of conclusive information in efficacy and their possible side effects on diseases, which made it one of the most important problems faced by doctors (Hadi, Mohammadi, Hadi, Roshanravan, & Kafeshani, ; Izzo, Hoon‐Kim, Radhakrishnan, & Williamson, ). In this case, a comprehensive systematic review of available clinical trials can represent the most reliable evidence of medicinal plant efficacy.…”

“…NAFLD can affect 15–30% of the general population, with higher prevalence in obese individuals (Bellentani, 2017). The pathogenesis of NAFLD is multifactorial and it seems that obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and oxidative stress have an important role in accumulation of fatty droplets in hepatocytes (Hadi, Pourmasoumi, Najafgholizadeh, Kafeshani, & Sahebkar, 2019; Mansour‐Ghanaei, Pourmasoumi, Hadi, & Joukar, 2019; Marjot, Moolla, Cobbold, Hodson, & Tomlinson, 2019). Poor control of NAFLD is associated with a range of problems (from benign steatosis to hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis) that reduce quality of life, increase mortality, and impose high costs to the healthcare system (El‐Kader & El‐Den Ashmawy, 2015; Vuppalanchi & Chalasani, 2009).…”
