Effect of recent revisions to the geomagnetic reversal time scale on estimates of current plate motions

Abstract: Recent revisions to the geomagnetic time scale indicate that global plate motion model NUVEL‐1 should be modified for comparison with other rates of motion including those estimated from space geodetic measurements. The optimal recalibration, which is a compromise among slightly different calibrations appropriate for slow, medium, and fast rates of seafloor spreading, is to multiply NUVEL‐1 angular velocities by a constant, α, of 0.9562. We refer to this simply recalibrated plate motion model as NUVEL‐1A, and … Show more

“…The westernmost part of the Mediterranean is a region of a great research interest due to its complex geodynamic setting. Several models constructed from geophysical and geologic data have been proposed for the present-day geodynamic setting of the region (Argus et al, 1989;Dewey et al, 1989;DeMets et al, 1994;Calais et al, 2003). More recently, new geodetic data have been used to improve these models (McClusky et al, 2003;Nocquet and Calais, 2003;Stich et al, 2006;Fadil et al, 2006;Serpelloni et al, 2007;Fernandes et al, 2007;Tahayt et al, 2008;Perez-Peña et al, 2010;Vernant et al, 2010;Palano et al, 2011;Koulali et al, 2011).…”

“…In terms of global kinematics, our data show that, on average, the Suez-Sinai area motion (ITRF00 velocities) matches the African plate motion defined by the NNR-NUVEL-1A model [De Mets et al, 1994], even if space geodetic rates result on average slower than those predicted by about 7% (Figure 3). …”

“…12.4c). Interestingly, it is generally accepted that OCCs occur only in slow-to ultra-slow-spreading ridges under magmastarved conditions (Escartin et al 2003;Cannat et al 2006), whereas the CIR has been classified as an intermediate-spreading ridge with a spreading speed of 47.5 mm/year (DeMets et al 1994).…”
