Effect of relative humidity on the gas transport properties of zeolite A/PTMSP mixed matrix membranes

Abstract: CO2 permeability of zeolite A/PTMSP MMM increases with water content in the system, enhancing CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivities of PTMSP.

“…On the other hand, the model has been also updated to account for the effect of humidity by using the NELF-based solubility-diffusivity approach with two adjustable parameters A and B depending on the selective membrane material properties for each penetrating gas molecule, as [21,41].…”

“…where FFV(a) is the fraction of free volume available for gas transport as a function of the water activity, a, in the system, which accounted for the presence of water vapor in the feed. The values of A and B for PTMSP and Zeolite A-PTMSP MMM were reported elsewhere [21], and those used for IL-CS and HKUST-1/IL-CS MMM were estimated from the permeability values measured in the laboratory in wet and dry conditions.…”

“…This mechanism, however, tends to suffer from an inherent trade-off between permeability and selectivity, which limits the separation performance of the materials [11,12]. A number of strategies has been developed over the years to overcome this limitation, using, for example, mixed matrix membranes [13][14][15] or polymer and block copolymers with high CO 2 affinity [16][17][18][19]. As an alternative to conventional polymeric membranes, facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) have attracted attention because of the potential to achieve both high permeability and high selectivity [20,21].…”
