Effect of resveratrol and pterostilbene on aging and longevity

Abstract: Over the past years, several studies have found that foods rich in polyphenols protect against age-related disease, such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis, cataracts, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes (T2D), hypertension and Alzheimer's disease. Resveratrol and pterostilbene, the polyphenol found in grape and blueberries, have beneficial effects as antiaging compounds through modulating the hallmarks of aging, including oxidative damage, inflammation, telomere attrition and cell senesce… Show more

“…Beyond its effects on bone health, resveratrol has several positive effects on other aspects of health, such as aging in women, blood pressure, decreasing cardiometabolic disease risk, cognitive performance, and mental health . Hence, resveratrol is a cost‐effective supplement in health improvement, especially in adulthood.…”

“…PTER stands out for its antioxidant action against numerous types of free radicals: HO, H 2 O 2 (Castellani et al, 2008;Mikstacka et al, 2010;Acharya and Ghaskadbi, 2013) and NO • (Pan et al, 2008;Zhang et al, 2012). It is able to neutralize metal-induced radicals (Rossi et al, 2013;Saw et al, 2014) and to inhibit oxidation and lipoperoxidation processes (Rimando et al, 2002) causing a decrease in carbonylated proteins and oxidation by-products: MDA, HNE and 8-OHdG (Li Y. R. et al, 2018) (Figure 3). The administration of PTER improves the antioxidant defenses of the brain by raising the levels of CAT, GSH and the activity of SOD (Naik et al, 2017) (Figure 3).…”

“…Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol with anticardiovascular, anticancer, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiaging, antineurodegenerative, and other pharmacological effects [209]. Wu et al [210] used different doses (30 and 100 mg/kg/day) of resveratrol to intervene in mice with premature ovarian aging caused by chemotherapy.…”
