Effect of roughness as determined by atomic force microscopy on the wetting properties of PTFE thin films

Abstract: The influence of film roughness on the wetting properties of vacuum‐deposited polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) thin films has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle goniometry. Surface roughness has been characterized by atomic force microscopy in terms of RMS roughness (Rq) and fractal dimensions. A contact angle correlation with surface roughness, as determined by AFM, is evident from these results, which are discussed on the basis of wetting theory. The results also confirm tha… Show more

“…Although currently superhydrophobic surfaces are inspired by biological specimens, [80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97] the early research was inspired by the practical need to enhance coating repellency of water and snow. 98,99 These days, superhydrophobic coatings are manufactured by chemical, physical and/or mechanical modifications of both organic and inorganic materials. 69,[100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113] The opposite term of superhydrophobic is superhydrophilic, defined in the previous contribution.…”

“…One of the first companies, if not the first one, working on commercial superhydrophobic coatings was NTT in Japan, where one of us had the privilege to work with in the middle of 1990s. 98,99 Their spray that contained polytetrafluroethylene particles and a binder was specifically designed for antennas and other transmission systems, particularly located at a high elevation, to reduce the accumulation of snow (Figure 7). …”

“…With sufficient sensitivity in the spring deflection sensor, the tip can reveal surface profiles with nanometer scale resolution. 22 Three kinds of operation modes (contact, noncontact, and tapping) can be applied to different materials. AFM offers unique features: high magnification with high resolution, minimal sample preparation, and the ability to detect atomicscale defects and obtain two-dimensional or three-dimensional images of the sample from a single data collection.…”

“…Estudos mostraram que o aumento da rugosidade na superfície de um polímero após o recobrimento por plasma pode ser resultado da diferença das taxas de erosão, causada pelo bombardeamento de íons, entre as regiões amorfas e cristalinas do polímero [20] . Mais recentemente, foi demonstrado que a rugosidade da superfície de filmes depositados por plasma contribuíram para a obtenção de filmes ultra-hidrofóbicos [21][22][23] .…”
