Effect of saliva and serum on the adherence of Candida species to chlorhexidine-treated denture acrylic

Abstract: Summary. The effect of saliva and serum on the adherence of five strains of Candida albicans and one each of C. tropicalis and C. glabrata to chlorhexidine-pretreated acrylic was measured in vitro. A four-fold dilution of saliva or serum significantly inactivated the fungicidal effect of chlorhexidine gluconate. Pretreatment of the acrylic with unstimulated mixed saliva for 30 min led to a reduced adherence for all the Candida strains tested, whilst a similar pretreatment with serum slightly increased adhesion… Show more

“…A simple environment was preferred because the aim was to evaluate this virulence factor independently from the host factors. Moreover, several studies have been performed to examine the adhesion of C. albicans on acrylic surfaces or epithelial cells in the presence of bacteria, saliva and serum or carbohydrates 5,6,14,39,40…”

“…Therefore, chemical cleaning with immersion denture cleaners is suggested as the first choice for plaque control in these patients 11,12. Candidal infections have been successfully treated with chlorhexidine gluconate because it is an effective oral disinfectant 13,14. Fittydent is a chemical cleaning agent that is also used to remove denture plaque 9…”

“…Nystatin, amphotericin B, 5fluorocytosine, clotrimazole, and ketoconazole significantly inhibited the adherence of C. albicans to BECs (55). Pretreatment of denture acrylic with chlorhexidine (48,56) and exposure of Candzda to sublethal concentrations of chlorhexidine (56) resulted in reduced yeast adhesion to denture material.…”
