Effect of Saliva Contamination and Decontamination on Bovine Enamel Bond Strength of Four Self-etching Adhesives

Abstract: SUMMARYObjective: This study evaluated the effect of saliva contamination on the bovine enamel microtensile bond strengths (µTBS) of four selfetching adhesives. Materials and Methods: The labial enamel surfaces of extracted non-carious bovine incisors were serially wet ground. The enamel surfaces were not contaminated (Group A), contaminated with saliva before/after priming (Groups B/C) or they were water-sprayed after salivary contamination occurred before/ after priming (Groups D/E). Four self-etching adhesi… Show more

“…Furthermore, bovine and human enamel possess the same bonding/cementing behavior with dental adhesives and cements (Nakamichi et al, 1983;Jiang et al, 2010;Yassen et al, 2011). Two matching pretreated enamel surfaces directly cemented together with GICs/RMGICs under finger pressure were chosen in this study, because dental prostheses are usually inserted onto or into prepared teeth under finger pressure and this method was also reported in a previous study (Altintas et al, 2008).…”

“…Before fatigue simulation, the Weibull moduli of the "Silane" group was slightly higher than that of the "No Treatment" group, which may mean that the application of silane reduced the variation. Dentin or enamel surfaces contaminated by silane solutions may exhibit decreased bond strength during the repair process as saliva contamination on enamel surfaces reduces the enamel bond strength 25) . Therefore, omitting the silane treatment might be advantageous for repair work.…”
