Effect of sand-fouled ballast on train-induced vibration

Abstract: One of the most important issues in desert areas is ballast layer solidification due to windy sand accumulation. This phenomenon increases track modulus which leads to serious damage in railway track components. On the other hand, one of the side effects of this problem is the increase in ground-borne vibration during train passing. Therefore, this research is devoted to the investigating effect of sand-fouled ballast on train-induced vibration by means of experimental and numerical methods. For this purpose, … Show more

“…Mosayebi et al [10] studied the effects of support stiffness on behavior of ballasted railway tracks. Also, Esmaeili et al [11] studied train induced ground vibrations due to moving loads. Rail support modulus is known as one of the most important parameters which can affect on the dynamic behavior of railway tracks.…”

“…Moreover, Zakeri and Abbasi [9] and Zakeri et al [10] investigated the support modulus of railway track in field tests. In another study, Esmaeili et al [11] investigated the support stiffness on train induced vibrations in desert land. Reviewing the existing literature indicates that the less researches have been done on the effects of the support stiffness on the vehicle/track interaction specifically by considering the important parameters such as the ballast depth, sleeper width and the distance of sleepers.…”
