Effect of Sauropus Androgynus (Katuk) Extract on Egg Production and Lipid Metabolism in Layers

Abstract: The present study was conducted to evaluate effect of Sauropus androgynus extract (SAE) on egg production and lipid metabolism in layer chickens. Forty-eight layers aged 42 weeks (strain RIR) were distributed to 6 treatment groups as follows. One group was fed diet without SAE as the control (P 0 ), and other five groups were fed diet plus hot water-extracted SAE at level of 9 g/kg diet (W 9 ), diet plus ethanol extracted SAE at level of 0.9 g/kg diet (E 0.9 ), diet plus ethanol extracted SAE at level of 1.8 g… Show more

“…The reduction of fat deposition might partly be caused by methylpyroglutamate. Methylpyroglutamate may be converted to glutamic acid in the gut (Santoso et al, 2005). It was known that glutamic acid was effective to reduce fat deposition in poultry.…”

“…Agustal et al (1997) found that the Sauropus androgynus leaves was rich in methylpyroglutamate. Methylpyroglumate might convert to glutamic acid in gastrointestinal tract of the chickens (Santoso et al, 2005), and therefore increasing the levels of glutamic acid in meat. Compounds that might play an important role in the decline of broiler meat odor was unknown.…”

“…SALE has been proven to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride contents as well as the deposition of fat in the meat of broiler chickens (Santoso et al, 2010a(Santoso et al, , 2010bSantoso and Suharyanto, 2011) and laying hens (Santoso et al, 2005) fed a normal protein levels. It is unknown whether SALE effectively reduce the deposition of fat in broilers fed low protein diets.…”

“…Basil leaves, Sauropus androgynus leaves, bay leaves, noni fruit, papaya leaves, and Moringa leaves have potential as alternative feed additives. Santoso et al (2005) showed that the supplementation of aqueous extract of Sauropus androgynus leaves reduced egg cholesterol contents at 40%. In another study , the aqueous extract reduced abdominal fat deposition at 20% and decreased carcass fat content at 10%.…”
