Effect of Scoria on Various Specific Aspects of Lightweight Concrete

Abstract: Experimental research on the technical characteristics of lightweight concretes incorporating scoria was conducted. The objective of this research is to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of the use of scoria, in lightweight concretes. Coarse scoria of 5/10 and 10/20 mm were used. A portion of the aggregate mixtures had an average particle size B100 lm. Scorias are often used as the constituents of structural concrete and insulating materials. The usability of the concretes tested in this study broa… Show more

“…Due to the abundance of scoria cones in many places of the world, various investigations of volcanic scoriae as a cement replacement have been conducted. In addition to the amorphous phases, plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene, illite, hematite and kaolinite are found in these materials ( Khan and Alhozaimy, 2011 ; Rajaonarison et al., 2017 ). This mineralogical assemblage is similar to that of volcanic scoriae from Tombel Plain, Bamileke Plateau and Noun Plain ( Mbowou et al., 2020 ).…”

“…Saudi Arabian scoriae, for example, have SiO 2 values ranging from 41.14 to 46.5 wt.%; Al 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 contents vary from 14.74 to 17.2 wt.% and 12.2 to 17.25 wt.%, respectively ( Celik et al., 2014 ; Khan and Alhozaimy, 2011 ). Madagascar related materials have similar content ( Rajaonarison et al., 2017 ). Similar findings were made on scoriae from the Cameroon Volcanic Line ( Figure 13 ).…”

“…Thermal insulation, resistance to fire, sound insulation, enhancing durability, and environmental friendliness are the main advantage of lightweight concrete [16][17][18][19]. However, previous research works have shown that lightweight concrete has low density, less strength and high water absorption capacity.…”

“…The production organization of multilayered wall panels is associated with a deep technological process restructuring, as well as the need to provide the production with expensive thermal insulation materials. Under these conditions, it is obvious that there is a need to find effective ways to increase the thermal insulation capabilities of single-layer structures [1][2][3][4][5][6].…”
