An increasing number of numerical morphodynamic models predict the evolution of bed configuration over a wide spectrum of spatial and temporal scales due to the development of advanced numerical methods and increased computational power. The increasing use of numerical morphodynamic models is closely related to the growing availability of high‐resolution river data sets. Today, the main difficulty in using numerical morphodynamic models is that they are used by nonspecialists modellers or modellers that are not morphodynamics specialists, which can lead to errors. These errors include inadequate parameterization of processes for applications at larger spatial and temporal scales, confusion between physical and numerical phenomena when interpreting numerical results, and the assumption that there is a need for a huge volume of data for developing numerical morphodynamic models. The present work aims to achieve two objectives. To avoid these errors, the first objective is to outline the steps in the development of numerical morphodynamic models. The development of numerical morphodynamic models is now possible with public databases. The second objective is to show the effectiveness of BASEMENT to study the impact of existing and future structures on the river hydrodynamics and bedload transport using case study examples.

Los canales de desvío y vertedores laterales en un río de planicie, derivan los flujos líquidos excedentes, reduciendo los niveles y evitando el desbordamiento de los cauces, lo que mitiga las inundaciones. El estudio tuvo el objetivo de determinar la tasa de sedimentos en suspensión por efectos de un vertedor lateral en un río de planicie. El funcionamiento de estas estructuras cambia el comportamiento del flujo líquido y de los sedimentos que transporta en suspensión, provocando cambios en la morfología e hidrodinámica del cauce. Se utilizó un perlador de flujo Doppler (ADCP) River Ray y un muestreador integral de sedimentos en suspensión US-DH59, para medir los flujos líquidos y sólidos en el río de la Sierra en el Estado de Tabasco, México y en el vertedor lateral El Censo. Los datos obtenidos en campo se utilizaron para evaluar los efectos del vertedor lateral sobre la hidrodinámica y morfología del cauce. Los resultados muestran que hay un incremento de 109.4% en la tasa de sedimentos en el flujo aguas abajo del vertedor y desequilibrio geomorfológico, lo que denotan una alteración al comportamiento natural del flujo bifásico compuesto por una fase de flujo líquido y otra de flujo de sedimentos.

The New Ibrahimia Head Regulator (NIHR) is equipped with double leaf gates and the flow is planned to be passing over these gates. Sediment deposition is likely to occur upstream of the gates due to the reduction in the flow velocity in the zone of back water curve. This research aims at studying the effect of sedimentation on the flow characteristics of the NIHR. Physical modeling and regression analysis were employed to conduct this research. The sedimentation depth was taken as 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the gate height. A length of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% of the distance between the existing and the New Ibrahimia Head Regulator was employed. The discharge coefficient increases with the increase of the sedimentation. A new stage-discharge relationship was developed in case of sediment and no sediment. A larger physical model is recommended to study the effect of upstream sediment on the downstream hydraulic jump.
