Effect of Seed Pre- Germination Treatment and Light Regimes on The Germination and Growth of Myrianthus Arboreus (P. Beauv) Seedlings

Abstract: The effects of seed pre-treatment methods on the germination and growth of Myrianthus arboreus under two light regimes was conducted in the nursery of the Department of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management, University of Benin, Benin City. The seed pre-treatment methods were 24 hours soaking in water (T1), 12 hours soaking in water (T2), seeds tied in black nylon (T3), control no treatment (T4) and repeated under two light regimes which were open light regime and medium light regime. Experiment was set up … Show more

“…In fact, M. arboreus is a forest tree of semi-deciduous and evergreen forest (Munier et al 2015). Even though it is not a timber tree, this intermediate density compared to others MFPS for example can be explained by the fact that, it possess a degree of seed dormancy which is crucial for regeneration [28] . In fact, seeds in general are normally a key element for the success or failure of natural regeneration [29] .…”

“…The physiological responses of seed germination to osmotic stress have been described [9,16,17]. It was also shown that seeds priming with sulfuric acid improved seed germination and disrupted the dormancy of Sabina vulgaris and Adansonia digitata seeds by enhancing water absorption by the embryo and softening the seed coat tissue [18,19].…”

“…A good growth media would provide sufficient nutrients required for the plant growth, serve as reservoir for nutrients and water, allow oxygen diffusion to the roots and permit gaseous exchange between the roots and atmosphere outside the root substrate [8]. The quality of seedling obtained from a nursery influences re-establishment in the field and the eventual in the productivity of quality crops [9].…”
