Effect of sepiolite on properties of silicone rubber/melamine/starch/sepiolite flame retardant composites

Abstract: In this work, a novel silicone rubber composite with low smoke, good mechanical property, and excellent flame retardant was prepared by introducing melamine (MEL), starch (St), and sepiolite (SEP) into SR. The effect of the amount of SEP on the mechanical properties of SR composites was investigated. The results showed that the mechanical properties were optimal when the amount of SEP was 30 phr. The tensile sections of the composites were characterized by SEM. The flame retardant properties of the composites … Show more

“…Additionally, the improvement in the surface roughness confirmed the main fracture mode of plastic deformation, resulting in a considerable increase in the elongation at break of the PEO/PBAT/PN-DOPO/Sep@AlPO 4 composites. Moreover, PEO/PBAT/Sep15% also presented a rough surface with obvious protrusions and orientations, as shown in the high-magnification SEM image ( Figure 11 (d3)), originating from the inorganic properties of fibrous sepiolite (marked with a red ellipse) [ 55 ]. Hence, the PEO/PBAT/Sep15% sample exhibited the maximum tensile strength.…”

“…Similarly, Zhang [6] et al demonstrated the effectiveness of an aluminum diethylphosphinate and octaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane synergistic flame-retardant system, which imparted excellent flame retardancy to silicone rubber composites. Certain individual flame retardants, such as diatomite [7], sepiolite [8], montmorillonite [9], and halloysite [10], may exhibit limited flameretardant effectiveness when used alone. However, their excellent flame retardancy can serve as a foundation for optimizing compounding with multiple flame retardants [11].…”

“…Sepiolite (SEP) appeared the demonstrated excellent flame retardancy as a flame retardant from numerous research results [22][23][24][25][26][27]. SEP could significantly enhance the stability of the carbon layer and improve the flame retardancy of silicone rubber [28]. SEP and metal-organic framework were introduced into thermoplastic polyurethane and found the HRR and total heat release (THR) of the composite could be reduced by 78.9% and 39.1%, respectively [29].…”
