Effect of short moderate intensity exercise bouts on cardiovascular function and maximal oxygen consumption in sedentary older adults

Abstract: Aim To investigate effect of <10 min moderate intensity exercise on cardiovascular function and maximal oxygen consumption ( V O 2 max) among sedentary adults. Methods We studied 53 sedentary urbanites aged ≥50 years, randomised into: (1) male (M S ) and (2) female (F S ) undertaking three short-duration exercise (5-10 min) daily, and (3) male (M L ) and (4) female (F L ) exercising 30-60 min 3-5 days weekly. Resting systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate and V O 2 max were me… Show more

“…Several meta-analyses have evaluated the role of exercise on cardiovascular risk factors ( Table 2 ). First, exercise improves cardiorespiratory fitness at different ages [ 68 , 69 ], even in the elderly [ 70 ] and when performed in a reduced-time session of moderate activity [ 71 ].…”

“…For body composition, those participants prescribed the health care mode changed their weight, BMI, body fat rate, and fat mass significantly, but their muscle mass was unchanged. Unsurprisingly, this is in line with results of other interventions with or without calory restriction, implemented in a variety of populations [25][26][27][28][29][30]. Most of these were short-term intervention programs (6 to 12 weeks), and evidence of long-term effectiveness of exercise intervention in middle-aged and older adults is insufficient.…”

“…The generation of our exercise prescription was based on the assessment of baseline data. It consisted of information collected by an internet-based questionnaire system, including the individual's current level of physical activity, history of chronic diseases (eg, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes and hypertension) and drug use (eg, types, dosage, and times), symptoms of the disease (eg, exercise dysfunction, hypoglycemia, and hypotension symptoms), health-related lifestyle (eg, eating, smoking and drinking habits), and family history of disease (Figure 2; other details are published elsewhere [27]); and information collected by internet-based instruments, which included physiological parameters (cardiovascular function, body composition, bone mineral density, and physical fitness) as obtained from a body composition monitor (BX-BCA-100, Institute of Intelligent Machines), a cardiovascular function monitor (BX-CFTI-100, Institute of Intelligent Machines), an arteriosclerosis detector (BX-AS-100, Institute of Intelligent Machines), a bone densitometer (BX-BDI-500A, Institute of Intelligent Machines), and physical fitness detectors, including a handgrip strength meter (TSN100-WL, Physical Fitness Sports Technology Company), a reaction time meter (TSN100-FY, Physical Fitness Sports Technology Company), a 1-leg stand meter with closed eyes (TSN100-ZL, Physical Fitness Sports Technology Company), a spirometer (TSN100-FH, Physical Fitness Sports Technology Company), and a flexion measurement instrument of sitting position (TSN100-TQ, Physical Fitness Sports Technology Company). Figure 3 displays examples of screenshots showing examination results of the bone densitometer and cardiovascular function monitor.…”

“…27 In sedentary adults that were given an exercise regime of short-duration (5-10 minutes), moderate-intensity jogging performed 3 times daily, an improvement of VO2max was noticed after 24 weeks of intervention. 28 Therefore, it is likely that possible variability of habitual physical activity of each subjects in our study had also affected their CRF level.…”
