“…The weak P 2p peak at ~133.0 eV may be ascribed to phosphorus surrounded by different chemical environments (phosphate‐like structure) . Silver presents in Ag 0 state at the film surface, with the Ag 3d peaks positioned at 374.0 eV (3d 3/2 ) and 368.0 eV (3d 5/2 ), rather than Ag 2 O . Note that AgNO 3 can be quickly decomposed to form metallic silver by heating even at about 200°C.…”

“…Second, silver ions can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) by catalyzing molecule oxygen in water, and ROS will cause bacteria death . The bactericidal mechanisms of Ag‐bioactive glass films can still work in vivo, which is unlike the photocatalysis related bactericidal mechanism of TiO 2 films …”

“…The presence of the metal particles, much smaller than the wavelength of light embedded within transparent metal oxide matrices leads to surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which manifests itself as absorption appearing in the visible region of the optical spectrum [19]. The Al 2 O 3 :Ag film, after preheating has E g =4.2 eV and it can be observed that the optical band gap is increased with the temperature as E g =4.5 and 5.1 eV for 600 °C annealed sample (for 30 and 60 min, respectively).…”

“…The controllable and long-lasting release of active silver ions from Ag-TiO 2 films would be favourable for the treatment of post-implantation infections. Antibacterial Ag-TiO 2 films are prepared on biomedical metals by the methods of vapour deposition, 17,31 plasma electrolytic processing, 10 sol-gel coating, 5,14,24 etc. In comparison with vapour deposition and electrochemical techniques, the sol-gel coating method has the advantages of independence of substrate shape, the good control of coating composition, thickness and topography, the ease in dopant introduction, and the relative ease of processing, etc.…”
