Effect of single bout of maximal excercise on plasma antioxidant status and paraoxonase activity in young sportsmen

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the participation of plasma PON1 (paraoxonase activity [PON] and arylesterase activity [ARE]) in antioxidant defense in response to a single bout of maximal exercise. PON, ARE, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS]), total antioxidant status (ferric reducing ability of plasma [FRAP]), concentration of uric acid [UA], and total bilirubin (TBil) were determined in the plasma before, at the bout and 2 h after maximal exercise … Show more

“…We concluded that PON1 may be a co-factor of the first line of antioxidant defense during ME. 10 However, it was still questionable, if the observed PON1 changes at the bout of ME would only apply to sportsmen with the aforementioned characteristics or if the phenomenon was more generalized, applying to other groups of sportsmen.…”

“…10,11 Our aim was to find whether the type and duration of training before trial affects changes in PON1 activity induced by ME. In addition, dependence on PON1 polymorphism was investigated.…”

“…Nowadays, growing attention is drawn to the PON1 because of convincing evidence that PON1 plays a role in protection from cardiovascular disease (6). Here, in an experimental animal model, it was revealed that ET (14.03 %) and ST (27.48 %) resulted in significant increases in serum PON1 activity in Albino Wistar rats.…”

“…Furthermore, PON1 is a calcium-dependent esterase (4), bound to the surface of HDL (5), and acts as an antioxidant enzyme (2,6). This 43-kDa glycoprotein enzyme with 345 amino acids is synthesized in the liver (2) and released in the blood (4).…”

“…In addition, five months of anaerobic training induced an elevation in the circulating PON1 activity [83]. Moreover, the PON1 activity was found to have increased following a single maximal exercise; and this effect was much more pronounced in active than in sedentary subjects [63,64]. However, in men with metabolic syndrome, no effect of a single submaximal exercise on the circulating PON1 was demonstrated [81].…”
