Effect of sintering temperature on microstructural evolution of M48 high speed tool steel bonded NbC matrix cemented carbides sintered in inert atmosphere

Abstract: This work presents the results on microstructure and hardness evaluation of NbC-12wt% M48 high speed steel (HSS) cemented carbides, pressureless sintered at different temperatures in argon atmosphere. To evaluate the effect of sintering process on the microstructure, sintering was performed in the range of 1260 ˚C to 1420 ˚C according to dilatometer analysis. The sintered samples were characterized using several techniques, including determination of density by Archimedes, measurement of hardness and fracture … Show more

“…However, the relative density was above 97% for all samples, which implies that the SPS parameters used in this study could produce HSS MMCs with nearly full density. For carbide-reinforced HSS MMCs, the decrease in relative density was mainly due to the cluster of carbide particles [23,24]. By using S390 powders with a small size of D50 = 20.51 µm, the size and density of pores in designed MMC samples were reduced, which suppresses the cluster of carbide particles.…”

“…The introduction of refractory carbides, carbonitrides, and oxides into the CPHSS composition provides them with high hardness and heat resistance and the high speed powder base with high viscosity and ductility. CPHSS can be classified as a generic class of adaptive tool materials [77][78][79][80].…”

“…Moreover, both the dissolution of Nb atoms and the precipitation of NbC can improve the microhardness and wear resistance of the coating. Hadian et al [29] prepared NbC-M48 high-speed steel composites with a volume fraction of 88% NbC by enforcing the vacuum hot pressing technique, with a hardness of 14.91 ± 0.14 GPa and a fracture toughness (K IC ) of only 1.56 ± 0.3 MPam 1/2 . Sen [23] et al prepared NbC coating on the surface of AISI 1040 steel by using thermal reaction-diffusion technology.…”
