Numerous scientists have studied basalt fiber (BF) reinforced concrete and found encouraging results. However, information is scattered, and compressive assessment is yet necessary to collect the data from prior research on BF, present research advancement, and future research guidelines of BF reinforced concrete. Furthermore, mostly research focus to review on strength and durability aspects of BF reinforced concrete while no researched focus on thermal properties, microstructure analysis and environmental benefits of BF reinforced concrete. Therefore, the primary focuses of this paper are BF treatment, BF reinforced concrete performance at high temperatures, microstructure analysis, environmental advantages, and application in civil engineering. Results show that BF-reinforced concrete performs much better than traditional concrete at high temperatures. Additionally, the use of BF enhanced the heat conductivity of concrete. BF addition to concrete seems to have reduced interfacial transition zone (ITZ) fractures, according to a microstructure study. When opposed to traditional steel fibers, BFs may be thought as reinforcements that are less harmful to the environment. The study also highlights the significance of BFs in the building industry. The assessment also identified research gap research for further studies.

Nuclear energy offers a wide range of applications, which include power generation, X-ray imaging, and non-destructive tests, in many economic sectors. However, such applications come with the risk of harmful radiation, thereby requiring shielding to prevent harmful effects on the surrounding environment and users. Concrete has long been used as part of structures in nuclear power plants, X-ray imaging rooms, and radioactive storage. The direction of recent research is headed toward concrete’s ability in attenuating harmful energy radiated from nuclear sources through various alterations to its composition. Radiation shielding concrete (RSC) is a composite-based concrete that was developed in the last few years with heavy natural aggregates such as magnetite or barites. RSC is deemed a superior alternative to many types of traditional normal concrete in terms of shielding against the harmful radiation, and being economical and moldable. Given the merits of RSCs, this article presents a comprehensive review on the subject, considering the classifications, alternative materials, design additives, and type of heavy aggregates used. This literature review also provides critical reviews on RSC performance in terms of radiation shielding characteristics, mechanical strength, and durability. In addition, this work extensively reviews the trends of development research toward a broad understanding of the application possibilities of RSC as an advanced concrete product for producing a robust and green concrete composite for the construction of radiation shielding facilities as a better solution for protection from sources of radiation. Furthermore, this critical review provides a view of the progress made on RSCs and proposes avenues for future research on this hotspot research topic.

Novel sustainable steel fiber reinforced preplaced aggregate concrete incorporating Portland limestone cement

This study proposes a novel approach by adding Portland limestone cement (PLC) to preplaced aggregate steel fiber reinforced concrete (PASFRC) to create a sustainable concrete that minimizes CO2 emissions and cement manufacturing energy usage. The method involves injected a flowable grout after premixing and preplacing steel-fibers and aggregates in the formwork. This study evaluates the mechanical properties of a novel sustainable concrete that uses PLC and steel fibers. To achieve the intended objective, long and short end-hooked steel fibers of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 6% were incorporated in PASFRC. Also, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to examine the data. Results indicated that PLC and higher fiber doses increased the mechanical properties of PAC. At 90 days, PASFRC mixtures containing 6% long steel fibers demonstrated superior compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths, registering the highest values of 49.8 MPa, 7.7 MPa, and 10.9 MPa, respectively and differed by 188%, 166%, and 290%, respectively from fiberless PAC. The study confirmed the suitability and effectiveness of using PLC with steel fibers in PAC which significantly improved the mechanical properties of PASFRC. This was verified through analytical analysis and new empirical equations were proposed to predict the mechanical properties of PASFRC.
