Effect of Soil Conditioning on the Moisture Content and the Salt Profile of the Soil Under Irrigation with Saline Water

Abstract: The research work was started on the preliminary knowledge that the risk of secondary salinization is high in the hobby gardens around Karcag as the water of the aquifers used for irrigation is saline, nevertheless irrigation in the drought periods is essential for vegetable production. A complex experiment was set up in 12 simple drainage lysimeters at the lysimeter station of the Research Institute of Karcag in 2012 in order to simulate the conditions of irrigation characteristic in the region with the goal … Show more

“…Soil conditioning applied in some consecutive years results in looser and improved soil structure and better cultivability due to the enhanced biological activity and the extended root system (Szűcs et al 2015;Urbanovicova et al 2018). In their preliminary study, Zsembeli et al (2019) established that the application of Neosol had a positive impact on the water and salt balance of the soil by the improved infiltration and percolation, and also contributes to preserving more water in the root zone.…”

“…Salinity is a major environmental challenge in agricultural production, as the salts transported to and accumulated in the root zone could affect crop yield and quality negatively as they are generating an osmotic pressure [11,12].…”

“…According to our previous soil analyses and soil conditioner experiments carried out in Karcag, we categorized soil conditioners into different groups (Kovács et al, 2013;Monori et al, 2009;Szűcs et al, 2014aSzűcs et al, , 2014bSzűcs et al, , 2015Tuba et al, 2020bTuba et al, , 2020aZsembeli, Sinka, et al, 2019;. The first group includes the natural organic materials (like composts).…”
