“…Bongers et al considered that disturbance would increase the PPI/MI value of a soil nematode community, whereas the PPI/MI value of an undisturbed natural environment would be lower than that of a disturbed environment [33]. Plants optimally use nutrient resources when the PPI/MI values are close to 0.9, whereas the PPI/MI values near 1.2 indicate slight nutrient disturbances [12]. As shown in this study, the PPI/MI values of the closed canopy and small gaps were significantly higher than those of the medium and large gaps (Table 3), which indicated that the environment of the medium and large gaps was relatively stable or less disturbed.…”

“…Numerous studies have suggested that the composition and structure of the nematode community are sensitive ecological indicators that can be used to determine the integrated effects of disturbances on small-scale spatial variations in the decomposer community in forest ecosystems [8][9][10]. The main reasons are that (1) soil nematodes are the Earth's most abundant metazoan and respond rapidly to environmental changes (e.g., warming, drought, and land-use change) and (2) their feeding specificity and high number of species play an indispensable role in the soil decomposer food web, such as by regulating the microbial community structure [11,12].
