Effect of Solids Loading and Dispersant Concentration on Strain Mismatch and Deformation of Slip‐Cast Green Bodies

Abstract: A method has been developed to identify low levels of strain mismatch present in bodies in the green state. High-aspectratio beams of alumina were slip cast at 35-50 vol% solids over a range of poly(acrylic acid) concentrations. After sintering in an unconstrained manner, the beams deform into an arc. The magnitude and direction of curvature was observed to depend on both the solids loading and the concentration of polyelectrolyte. Model calculations indicate that strain mismatch within the beams of 1%, which … Show more

“…To control the kinetics of the casting process, applying a stepwise increase of the slip inlet pressure during slip casting can minimize this deviation of pressure drop. 8,25,26) Therefore, the resultant microstructure of the cake produced by a stepwise pressure loading will be more homogenous than the one of static pressure loading. In this work, the slip inlet loading was applied in five steps up to a maximum (0.5 MPa) and continuously water pumped to achieve a pressure of -0.05 MPa, which turned out to be the best casting conditions for the PVHSC process.…”

“…It is thought that this causes the reactions not to be completed especially during sintering at 1450 °C since packing and intergranular interactions between grains in a composition containing 45% solids by weight are low. One possible mechanism is segregation of particles of different sizes, which is increased when solid loading is low and, thus, hindered settling is reduced [27,28]. Another reason for this situation is the lack of any additive in the prepared mixture.…”
