Effect of some plant extracts on Meloidogyne arenaria Neal, 1889 (Tylenchida: Meloidogynidae) and tomato

Abstract: Some plant extracts that have toxic effects to nematodes might be used as an alternative control method of plant parasitic nematodes. For this purpose; two different preparation types (cold and hot) of extracts of Viscum album, Rosmarinus officinalis, Circium arvense, Myrtus communis, Ocimum basilicum, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Melisa officinalis, Taraxacum officinale, Matricaria chamomilla, Chelidonium majus, Humulus lupulus, Mentha pulegium were searched the effects on Meloidogyne arenaria Neal, 1889 (Tylench… Show more

“…In order to overcome these problems, it is crucial to adopt effective and environmentally friendly methods to control nematodes (Nolling & Becker 1994). One such practice would be the use of plant extracts that have nematicidal properties (Aydınlı & Mennan 2014). The flowers, shoots, and leaves of Nerium oleander L. have been shown to have nematicidal effects on Meloidogyne javanica (Treub 1885;Chitwood 1949;Moosavi 2012).…”

“…(2007) pointed out that aqueous extracts of neem cake (5% dose) and neem leave (1.5%) decreased the female invasion in the roots at approximately 30 % lower and the gall index to 12 fold lower on tomato agains M. javanica, respectively. Aydınlı and Mennan (2014) used the aqueous extracts diffrent plants against M. arenaria and observed the lowest gall index (5.0) on the roots of tomato exposured by Viscum album cold extract.…”

“…Spices obtained by drying various plant parts such as roots, leaves and seeds, may be toxic to nematodes. Many studies show that extracts and oils derived from spice plants have negative effects on nematodes by inhibiting egg hatching, causing second-stage juvenile (J2) immobility, or being lethal (Oka et al, 2000;Ibrahim et al, 2006;Abbas et al, 2009;Aydınlı & Mennan, 2014;Youssef et al, 2015;El-Nagdi Wafaa et al, 2017). Therefore, in this study, the nematicidal potential of aqueous extracts from 13 spices plants for management of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal, 1889) Chitwood, 1949 was investigated in the laboratory and in pot experiments.…”
