Field experiments were conducted at Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai during rice fallow season 2013 and 2014 to evaluate the effect of irrigation, varieties and nutrient management for maximizing yield in rice fallow black gram. The experiments were laid out in split plot design with three replications. The main plot treatments comprised of irrigation (one supplemental irrigation at 25 DAS and no irrigation) and black gram varieties (ADT 3 and LBG 752) and nutrient management practices (Foliar spray of 2% DAP on 30 and 45 DAS, Pulse wonder at 5 kg/ha on 35 DAS and 1% 19:19:19 complex on 25 DAS fb 2% urea on 35 DAS, 2% urea phosphate on 35-40 DAS, soil application of DAP at 50 kg/ha to the standing paddy at the time of last irrigation and control) were assigned to sub plots. The results revealed that the rice fallow black gram given with one supplemental irrigation at 25 DAS recorded higher growth, yield attributes, yield, net return and BC ratio than no irrigation. Black gram variety LBG 752 registered higher plant height compared to ADT 3. However, yield attributes and yield were higher with ADT 3 whereas it was comparable with LBG 752. ADT 3 registered the highest net return and BC ratio than LBG 752. Foliar application of various nutrient sources performed similarly with respect to growth, yield attributes and yield of black gram. However, soil application of DAP 50 kg /ha during last irrigation to the standing paddy recorded higher net return and BC ratio followed by foliar application of 2% DAP on 30 and 45 DAS. Hence, black gram variety ADT 3 or LBG 752 given with one supplemental irrigation at 25 DAS followed by foliar application of 2% DAP at 30 and 45 DAS or soil application of DAP at 50 kg/ha to the standing paddy at the time of last irrigation could be recommended for getting higher productivity under rice fallow condition.

Background: With extensive adoption of mechanised harvest in paddy, the population of blackgram in the rice - blackgram relay cropping system is drastically affected due to the chain traverse by combine harvester. This has emerged as another major abiotic stress in addition to moisture stress at flowering stage of the crop, which resulted in poor yield.Methods: The studies were conducted during post rainy seasons of 2015-16 to 2017-18. with six treatments viz., T1 - Sowing blackgram by broadcasting 7-10 days prior to manual harvest of paddy, T2 - Sowing blackgram by no till seed drill on the day of harvest of paddy, T3 - Sowing blackgram by broadcasting 4-6 days prior to harvest of paddy by combine harvester, T4 - T1 + Life saving irrigation with mobile sprinkler once at 30-35 DAS, T5 -T2 + Life saving irrigation with mobile sprinkler once at 30-35 DAS, T6 -T3 + Life saving irrigation with mobile sprinkler once at 30-35 DAS Result: The results indicated that higher grain yield of 875 kg ha-1 was obtained with blackgram sown 7-10 days prior to manual harvest of paddy plus life saving irrigation on 30-35 DAS with mobile sprinkler using farm pond water, which was 31.6% higher than that of blackgram sowing with no till seed drill. The study also indicated that farm pond dug at an area of 100 m3 would be sufficient to irrigate 1 ha of blackgram through mobile sprinkler once at flowering stage (30-35 DAS by which the net return could be increased by `61416 ha-1.

Background: Yellow pepper production is the major farming activities of women in Nsukka senatorial zone of Enugu state of Nigeria. The main sources of irrigation for this group of farmers are tanks and under-ground tanks that are artificially supplied with water in their different farms, since natural sources of water are not always available. These women mostly use their buckets or other containers to fetch water from tanks. They continually monitor the water level of their tanks in all their farms to know the best time to refill those tanks and also, they irrigate their crops manually. With the continuous demand of this variety of pepper, this current approach is quite challenging, not sustainable and highly labour intensive. Hence, there is an urgent need to boost production and address those challenges and difficulties associated with the current irrigation method through Internet of Things and other innovative techniques. The aim of this paper is to use a smart system to monitor and control soil moisture, temperature and water level in the tank. The paper equally aims at detecting the location of the farm where tank that is to be refilled is placed. Methods: Simulation and experimental methodology was employed in this research. The components of the proposed system include sensors, GSM, GPS, water pumps and microcontroller. Ultrasonic sensor monitors the water level in the tank, moisture and temperature sensors monitor the soil moisture and temperature, water pump sprinkles water on the crops, GPS provides the location of the tank, GSM sends message when the need arises while the microcontroller takes decision and coordinates the functioning of the entire system Result: The research produced a system prototype that monitors and controls the usage of water on yellow pepper crops and refilling of water tank in the farm.
