Effect of stannous fluoride mouthrinse on dental plaque formation

Abstract: A double-blind, crossover design study was performed on 29 young adults to test the effectiveness of 0.1% SnF2 mouthrinse (250 ppmF-) on plaque formation using clinical and microbiological criteria. Participants were assigned to either a placebo or SnF2 rinse which was used twice daily for 5 days. After an interim recovery period of 2 days, the participants used the alternate rinse in a similar manner for another 5 days. Clinical data collected at the end of each experimental period included Gingival Index (GI… Show more

“…Since the introduction of chlorhexidine in the plaque control in the early 70s, several alternative plaque inhibitors with clear-eut effect as compared with placebo have been tested (5)(6)(7)(8). However, when compared with chlorhexidine none has shown equal or better activity without also giving unacceptable side effects (9)(10)(11)(12).…”

“…Dentifrices with triclosan and copolymer or a zinc salt have demonstrated anticaries activity [154] even in long-term studies [155]. In high-risk patients, amine and stannous fluoride may also be recommended based on the proven remineralization and anticaries action [156,157]. • In the prevention of recurrent aphthous ulcers.…”

“…The local delivery of antimicrobial agents into the periodontal pocket is considered to have excellent potential as an adjunct to traditional periodontal therapy. The following local delivery systems have been tried for different agents: dentifrices ( 34), mouthrinses ( 35, 36), dental gels ( 37, 38), irrigation devices ( 39–41) and professional administration into the pocket by means of syringes.…”
