Effect of starch addition on compression‐molded poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate)/starch blends

Abstract: Because of their biocompatibility and total biodegradability, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and starch have attracted attention as promising raw materials for manufacture of single-use plastic items and biomaterials. PHB/ maize starch blends with starch contents in the range of 0 -50 wt % were processed in an internal mixer, and their compression-molded films were characterized by tensile tests, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, wettability measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. Water and… Show more

“…Broader peaks can be observed at 19.9 • , 21.5 • , 22.5 • , 25.5 • and 27.15 • . These diffraction lines can be attributed to the orthorhombic PHB lattice (Thiré, Ribeiro, & Andrade, 2006). Diffraction patterns obtained for the composite membranes show only the cellulose peaks with a decrease intensity for the peak at 15 • for compositions up to 50% PHB (Fig.…”

“…Two main approaches have been applied to overcome these problems-blending or chemical modification. Starch can be blended with biodegradable polymers such as PHB (Lai et al 2006;Thire et al 2006), PLA (Jang et al 2007;Hao et al 2008;Ning et al 2008), PCL (Wang et al 2005;Rosa et al 2006;Kim et al 2007;Sarazin et al 2008) and chitosan (Xu et al 2005;Durango et al 2006;Nakamatsu et al 2006). Fabrication of composites based on organic or inorganic reinforcement is another possible solution to improve the performance of starch films.…”

“…Comportamentos similares foram relatados por Mendes [17] que constatou dois picos bem definidos de cristalinidade em torno de 2θ=13,2° e 2θ= 16,7°. Já Thire, Ribeiro e Andrade [18] obteve em seus resultados dois picos bem definidos de cristalinidade em torno de 2θ=13,6° e 2θ= 17,1° e célula unitária tipo ortorrômbica.…”
