Effect of storage of shelled Moringa oleifera seeds from reaping time on turbidity removal

Abstract: Moringa oleifera is an indigenous plant to Malaysia whose seeds are used for water purification. Many studies on Moringa oleifera have shown that it is highly effective as a natural coagulant for turbidity removal. In this study, two different methods for extraction of Moringa's active ingredient were investigated. Results of sodium chloride (NaCl) and distilled water extraction of Moringa oleifera seeds showed that salt solution extraction was more efficient than distilled water in extracting Moringa's active… Show more

“…Yet in a recent study, Golestanbagh et al did not find any significant difference in the coagulation efficiency of SMOS for turbidity removal stored in open and closed containers at room temperature for different durations, which varied from fresh seeds taken from the tree to storage for 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks.…”

“…Studies on the bioactive properties of Moringa seeds highlight multiple uses of this phanerogam, for example, turbidity removal of contaminated water by coagulation [16], biosorption of heavy metals in effluents [17], anti-inflammatory [18], and antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli [19]. However, bioactivity against vibrios has not been widely researched.…”

“…Another plant, Moringa oleifera, has been researched since the 1980s for its antimicrobial effect, which appears to be related to the presence of glycosides, 4-(𝛼-Lrhamnosyloxy)-benzyl isothiocyanate, and 4-(𝛼-Lrhamnosyloxy)-phenyl-acetonitrile (Costa et al 2017). Moringa is useful for removing turbidity of contaminated water by coagulation (Golestanbagh et al 2011) and biosorption of heavy metals in effluents (Araújo et al 2010). It is an anti-inflammatory (Pereira et al 2011) and has antibacterial activity.…”
