Context: Low-abrasive polishing powders such as glycine (GLY) or erythritol (ERY) are used for subgingival air polishing. GLY was reported to possibly affect the dentin surface, while this is unclear for ERY. Aims: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the substance loss from the dentin surface by air polishing with ERY at different settings for pressure (PR), distance (DI), and angulation of the spray jet to the surface (AJ). Materials and Methods: The in vitro testing was performed on smooth human root dentin surfaces. In 18 groups with 10 specimens each, ERY was applied with constant water supply for 5 s without moving the handpiece at the following settings: PR minimum (min), medium (med), and maximum (max); DI at 1, 3, and 5 mm; and 45° or 90° AJ. The substance loss was measured as defect depth (DD) using three-dimensional (3D)-laser profilometry. ANOVA with Bonferroni correction and α = 0.05 were used for statistical analysis. Results: The DD was statistically significantly higher at a DI of 1 mm compared to a DI of 5 mm for the respective groups of the same PR and AJ ( P < 0.05). For DI 1 mm, max PR, and AJ 90°, the maximum loss of substance amounted DD of 117 ± 43 μm. The minimal loss of substance occurred at minimal PR, 45° AJ, and a DI of 5 mm (15 μm × 20 μm). DD related directly with the parameters PR and AJ and inversely with DI. The highest influence on DD was proven for DI. Conclusions: Slight loss of dentin might occur during air polishing with ERY depending on DI, PR and AJ. The setting influences the amount of dentin loss.

Objectives:Prognosis of the avulsed teeth is mostly affected by extraoral dry period and storage medium used to store teeth before reimplantation. However, ability of storage media can affect cell viability and success of treatment. Various storage media were tried with some success. The present study was undertaken to comparatively evaluate the efficacy of hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS), propolis, Aloe vera, and pomegranate juice (PJ) in preserving the vitality of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells of avulsed teeth.Materials and Methods:Fifty orthodontically extracted sound teeth with healthy PDL were selected for the present study. Selected teeth were randomly divided into study groups (10 in each) and 5 each as positive and negative control groups. All the teeth were immersed immediately after extraction into respective storage media. Data were statistically analyzed using IBM SPSS software for Windows, Version 19.0., IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA. Analysis of variance and multiple range were done using Tukey's honestly significant difference with level of significance at 5% (P > 0.05).Results:Propolis (285,000 viable cells with standard deviation 4.11028 and standard error of 1.38097) showed more viable PDL cells followed by HBSS, A. vera, and PJ.Conclusion:Propolis, A. vera, and PJ can be used as an alternative tooth storage media.

Particulate synthetic hydroxyapatite (HAP) is rapidly gaining importance as a biomimetic agent in oral care products. The prerequisite for an adequate effect of the treatment is an efficient attachment of the HAP particles to the tooth substance. However, quantitative data about the interaction and affinity parameters involved are scarce. The authors used an in vitro approach with standardized bovine tooth enamel surfaces and aqueous dispersions of chemically pure synthetic HAP particles as a model system. Structural characterization of the HAP powder using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the particles are micrometer-sized stable clusters of crystallites that closely resemble the structure of natural enamel. Using SEM image analysis, the authors investigated the influence of HAP particle concentration and particle size on the efficiency of attachment to bovine tooth enamel based on pure mineral-mineral interaction. The results show that both play an important role and can be tailored for optimizing the efficiency of corresponding oral care formulations. The results also reveal the presence of structures resembling mineral bridges at the interfaces between HAP particles and enamel that provide indications for possible interaction mechanisms.
