Effect of sulphur and nitrogen fertilisation on winter wheat in Calcaric Luvisol

Abstract: In 2019-2021, the experiment was carried out with the aim to investigate how sulphur (S) fertiliser rates under different nitrogen (N) fertiliser backgrounds influenced winter wheat grain yield, grain quality, and plant productivity indicators. The winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar 'Janne' was grown in four N background treatments with N 60 , N 120 , N 180 , and N 240 without S fertilisation and also fertilised with S 15 (in all N fertilisation treatments), S 30 (only with N 120 and N 240 ), and S 6… Show more

“…Grain yield and proline content of Sakha 94 variety, RWC and Proline content of Sakha 93 variety, MDA content, SOD, CAT and ABX activities of Sids 12 variety were significantly higher than that of other varieties studied. The earlier achieved comparable results by Wang et al [3] Alam [4], Litke et al [31], Kubar et al [32] and Staugaitis et al [33]. According to Wang et al [3], with increased nitrogen application, antioxidant enzymes and grain production showed an increasing and subsequently decreasing tendency.…”

“…Both N and S are essential components of the plant enzymes [ 52 ] and also have a crucial role in the synthesis of essential S-containing amino acids [ 27 , 53 ] viz . cystine, cysteine, and methionine [ 41 , 54 ].…”

“…The starch content in wheat was recorded highest with T 1 [PK & S through SSP, both crops (no-N)] due to No–N application, which indicates the inverse relationship between N concentration in plants and carbohydrate accumulation. Staugaitis et al [ 27 ], also reported that starch in grains decreased with increasing fertilizer rates. The S deficiency is known to promote the accumulation of arginine and asparagine in wheat grains which increases the risk of acrylamide formation when products of wheat flour are cooked [ 38 ].…”
