Effect of Supplementation of Aromatic Plants Oils on Immunity, Udder Health and Milk Production of Friesian Cows

Abstract: Eight weeks prior to expected calving date, 32 Friesian cows were assigned according to parity to four homogenous groups (8 animals each). Cows were fed a basal ration alone as a control group 1 (CON G1), or basal ration supplemented with 25 mg black seed oil per kg body weight, (BSO G2), 11 mg chamomile flower oil (CFO G3), or 25 mg oregano leaves oil (OLO G4). Biochemical and hematological parameters were measured and there were within the normal ranges of cattle. Relative to the control group, aromatic plan… Show more

“…Cows with robust immunity are often able to clear pathogenic bacteria during invasion of the udder. In addition to their powerful antibacterial influence, essential oils can be used as an alternative to antibiotics to improve feed efficiency, nutrient use, and animal health ( 64 , 74 ). Dietary supplementation with black seed oil, chamomile oil, or cretian origanum oil starting 8 weeks before calving enhanced immunity in dairy cows ( 74 ).…”

“…Recent research has demonstrated the efficacy of some herbs with antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammation, and immunoreactive properties [1][2][3][4]. Research on dairy cows using herbs as feed additives reported a significant decline in the somatic cell count in milk, suggesting healing of inflammation in the mammary glands [5][6][7][8][9]. However, dietary herbal feed additive alone is insufficient to cure mammary inflammation in mastitis cases.…”
