Effect of Surface Modification on the Properties of Polypropylene Matrix Reinforced with Coir Fibre and Yam Peel Particulate

Abstract: Polypropylene composites reinforced with coir fibre and yam peel particulate were produced using compression moulding machine. Treated and untreated coir fibres were used; 1.5 M NaOH was used for the treated coir fibres. Yam peel was grouped into two, treated and untreated; the treated was modified using 1 M solution of NaOH and HCl in the proportion of 30% and 70%, respectively. The yam peel which was sun-dried for 14 days was pulverized and sieved to −45 µm. Samples were developed using treated and untreated… Show more

“…According to the study, 20% fixed teak wood dust combining with 5 and 10% banana fiber, kindled 5% reduction in and 13.1% increase in compressive strength respectively. Similarly, study of Adediran et al 34 , noted that an increase in dosage of bamboo fiber resulted in an insignificant contribution to the compressive strength while particulate distribution in matrix unfurled significant effect on the strength.…”

“…Dump bell shape mould 150 mm length and 3 mm thickness was used in the preparation of samples for the tensile test. Samples for flexural and impact were prepared using a mould of dimension 150 × 50 × 3 (mm 3 ) and 63.5 × 12.7 × 2.5 (mm 3 ) according to Adediran et al 34 . Samples for compressive strength were produced in moulds 40 mm diameter and 80 mm length.…”

“…The underlying rationale is to overcome the limitations of single fillers by incorporating additional additives that can bring about the desired properties and enhance service performance. Notably, some scholars have directed their efforts toward exploring the impact of natural fibers in conjunction with either synthetic or additional natural fillers for biomedical applications [12]. For instance, Sathish et al [13] manufactured and studied natural biopolymer composites for biomedical applications.…”
