Effect of Surface Roughness on Ultrasonic Testing of Back-Surface Micro-Cracks

Abstract: Surface roughness is one of the main factors that affect the ultrasonic testing of micro-cracks. This article theoretically analyzes the relationship between the changes in the energy intensity of crack echo waves and roughness-modified transmission coefficients. A series of simulations are carried out using two-dimensional sinusoidal curves as rough surface. Then, parallel experiments are performed on sample surfaces with different arithmetic average heights (Ra). The signal amplitude ratio factor (SARF) is d… Show more

“…However, this paper focuses on the effect of surface roughness on nonlinear Rayleigh wave propagation. This is much different than bulk waves reflecting from a rough surface as in Wang et al [ 37 ]. Therefore, the specimen surface where the wedge is coupled is made smooth by sequential abrasion with emery paper (grit #400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500).…”

“…furthermore, did not account for surface roughness. However, in actual structures, surface roughness causes signal attenuation and wave dispersion [11]. Using real specimens to obtain a sufficiently large training dataset would have been challenging.…”

“…Ultrasonic sensors generally require contact with the object surface through a coupling medium to improve the impedance between the object and the sensor 19,20 . Consequently, this measurement faces some challenges on certain objects such as small object areas, 21 uneven surfaces 22 and infections 23 . Some experiments have reported the use of audio frequencies to overcome this 24 .…”
