Effect of surface texturing on the dynamic characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearing comprising concepts of green tribology

Abstract: Surface texturing has emerged as a viable option for enhancing the surface properties. The present study analyzes the effect of full and partial micro-textured surface, at different locations and different kinds of dimple geometries, on the dynamic characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearings and made a comparative study with the non-textured bearings. Three different kinds of dimple geometries, namely, circular texture, square texture, and densely distributed square texture have been adopted for study. Th… Show more

“…As can be observed in Figure 10, the partially and fully textured journal bearings have greater orbits compared to the respective smooth journal bearings, due to the texturing effects that tend to increase the oil film thickness inside the bearing. Moreover, modifications in stiffness and damping of the fluid film may possibly occur with insertion of textures in the bearing according to Matele and Pandey, 28 which favors the increase of orbits amplitudes as verified analyzing the results. In current case, a possible reduction in damping occurred.…”

“…For validation of present results, the dynamic performance parameter i.e. non-dimensional direct damping coefficient (Cxx) and threshold speed are computed and compared with already latest published results obtained by Matele and Pandey 19 has been shown in Table 1. The results show good agreement with the published results.…”

“…Wang et al [92], Manser et al [93], and Ramos et al [94] compared the static performance characteristics of textured journal bearing with smooth journal bearing surface. Similarly, Matele et al [95], Jiang et al [96], and Jhoon et al [97] compared dynamic performance characteristics of textured journal bearing with smooth journal bearing surface. The important observations from the comparison study are discussed below: • Maximum pressure is increased for texturing within the converging zone of bearing [82].…”
