Effect of Surfactant on the Thermal Behavior of Cerate-Zirconate Ceramic Powder Prepared by Modified Sol-Gel Method

Abstract: BaCe0.54Zr0.36Y0.1O2.95 (BCZY10) ceramic powder was synthesized by a modified sol-gel method using metal nitrate salt as pre-cursors. The sample was prepared using three different types of surfactants namely polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyltrimetylammonium bromide (CTAB). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry was used to analyze the thermal decomposition of the dried (T=325 °C) and calcined (T=1100 °C) powder. Standard sample … Show more

“…The chelating agent such citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) act as a binder to grab the metal ions and form metal complexes whereas polymerizing agent such ethylene glycol (EG) will establish linkages between the chelates by the polymerization process. This method is an agreement with [7] and [8] that utilizing a modified sol-gel method in their works. As a comparison to other method used to synthesize BCZY, for example solid state reaction (SSR), it gives a few disadvantages to the powder properties such as requirement of higher calcination temperature and poor powder homogeneity [9].…”
