Effect of synthetic clay and biochar addition on dissipation and enantioselectivity of tebuconazole and metalaxyl in an agricultural soil: Laboratory and field experiments

Abstract: A B S T R A C TLaboratory and field experiments were conducted to assess how the addition of oleate-modified hydrotalcite (clay) and biochar (BC) to an agricultural soil affected the sorption, leaching, persistence, and enantiomeric composition of soil residues of two chiral fungicides, tebuconazole and metalaxyl. Laboratory experiments showed that the sorption of both fungicides ranked as follows: unamended soil < BC-amended soil < clay-amended soil. The addition of clay at a rate of 1% increased metalaxyl so… Show more

“…41 The enhancement of mesotrione sorption in ABC_WI-amended soil was a consequence of its ability to remove the herbicide from the solution. However, keeping in mind the Kd of mesotrione obtained for ABC_WI of 145 L/kg (Table 2), this would result in a theoretical calculated Kd value of 2.95 L/kg, according to the expression Kd-mixture = Kd-soil fsoil + Kd-sorbent fsorbent, 50 instead of 1.32 L/kg, which is the experimental value. This indicates that the sorption capacity of BC are altered as a function of the soil contact.…”

“…36,37 Few single enantiomer pesticides are produced or synthesized because the biodegradation, metabolism and toxicity of enantiomer pesticides are more selective, depending on the change in enantiomer ratios. 35,38 Research examining the effects of pure enantiomers in essential oils on insects is still limited. Thus there is an urgent need to develop alternative pesticides which result in a high positive effect on target pests, lower costs for crop protection and reduced harm to human health and the environment.…”

“…The dissipation of pesticides in soils amended with different organic residues under laboratory or field conditions has been reported (Marín-Benito et al, 2014; Herrero-Hernández et al, 2015; Gámiz et al, 2016). Other studies have addressed the changes in soil microbial structure and diversity after pesticide and organic residue application (Singh et al, 2014; Feld et al, 2015; Pose-Juan et al, 2015a; Álvarez-Martín et al, 2016).…”
