Effect of T6 Heat Treatment on Microstructure and Hardness of Nanosized Al2O3 Reinforced 7075 Aluminum Matrix Composites

Abstract: In this study, 7075 aluminum matrix composites reinforced with 1.5 wt.% nanosized Al2O3 were fabricated by ultrasonic vibration. The effect of T6 heat treatment on both microstructure and hardness of nanosized Al2O3 reinforced 7075 (Al2O3np/7075) composites were studied via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and hardness tests. The Mg(Zn,Cu,Al)2 phases gradually dissolved into the matrix under solution treatment at 480 °C for… Show more

“…The morphology and size of the massive Al 7 Cu 2 Fe phases show no change during the solution treatment due to its high melting point. While the base alloy shows discontinuity in the arrangement of precipitates in the matrix and along the grain boundary, the alloy after solid solution treatment continuous presence of precipitates in the matrix and along the grain boundary [20].…”

“…The distributed Al2O3np particles also inhibited the grain growth tendency during the heat treatment process. 18) Heat treatment given to a material will also engineer the microstructure that is inside a material. 19) In AA 7075, microstructural evolution will occur when heating causes precipitation on the surface of the material.…”

“…In this case, the structure and chemical composition will be in the form of a supersaturated solid solution, that is, α ss , at the temperature after cooling. 19 In aging, the supersaturated solid solution is heated to a temperature lower than the solution temperature and is allowed time so that the additional solution elements to diffuse and form several precipitates. The precipitates grow over time, and the GP semi-stable phases turn into stable equilibrium precipitates θ which are uniformly dispersed on the surface.…”
