Effect of tall oil fatty acids content on the properties of novel hyperbranched alkyd resins

Abstract: Hyperbranched alkyd resins (HBRA) were synthesized by modification of hydroxylated hyperbranched polyester (HBP1-4) with tall oil fatty acids (TOFA). The core is a hydroxylated hyperbranched polyester of fourth generation with OH groups in the periphery (18), which is endcapped with tall oil fatty acids. The occurrence of these reactions, HBP1-4 and TOFA, was determined by making use of acid value, nuclear magnetic resonance, and hydroxyl values. The effects of TOFA and HBP1-4 on properties of the HBRA resins … Show more

“…Table 4 presents the results of the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis. The values of number average molar masses (Mn) increased with the proportion of acrylic monomers employed in the synthesis and these are higher than HBR (6611 g/mol) [27] . The great difference between the Mn values of the HBRAA and HBR was due to the synthesis process, since a polymer with high molar mass can be obtained by miniemulsion polymerization [19] .…”

“…The difference on PI was possibly due to the miniemulsion polymerization process, which is random, since the acrylic monomers have so many places where they can be grafted. Figure 6 shows the DSC thermograms of the all HBRAA, which presented higher glass transition temperature (T g ) than HBR (-49.8 °C) [27] . The T g values of the HBRAA were as follow: HBRAA1, -24.7 °C, HBRAA2, -16.6 °C, HBRAA3, -14.5 °C and HBRAA4, -12.9 °C.…”

“…The rheological measurements in solution were performed in a Bohling HRNano rotational rheometer (TA instruments) at a strain of 2% using concentric cylinder geometry. Studies of the HEMMA copolymers film properties (gloss, flexibility, and adherence) were performed according to methodologies reported in previous studies [22][23][24] .…”

“…CTO has been investigated for production of adhesives [5], paints [6], rubber [7,8], coatings [9,10], biodiesel [11,12], paraffin-rich liquids [13], diesel fuel additives [14], ethylene and propylene [15], etc. A better understanding and information on the thermal and rheological properties of CTO such as viscosity, melting and crystallization are essential engineering parameters for the optimal design of processing equipment and optimization of production methods based on CTO.…”
