Effect of Target Polarization in Electron-Ion Recombination

Abstract: We present results of a study of the effect of target polarization on electron-ion recombination, and show that coherent radiation by the target electrons gives a large contribution to the recombination rate. It significantly modifies the nonresonant photorecombination background. A procedure has been devised whereby this contribution can be evaluated together with the conventional radiative recombination, independently of the dielectronic recombination component. Numerical results are presented for Zn2+, Cd2+… Show more

“…Evidences that the omitted contribution might be significant were reported in Refs. [11,12], where a part of the off-resonant DR (involving photon emission from a core electron) was studied. It was claimed that, for many-electron systems, this mechanism can significantly influence the RR process, yielding an order-of-magnitude enhancement in some specific cases.…”

“…for Ga and N, respectively. The exchange and correlation effects have been taken into account within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) formalism suggested by Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof (PBE) [7], particularly in the form of hybrid PBE functional with Hartree-Fock exchange, PBE0 [8]. The program AtomPAW provides the full set of data that are input parameters for the ABIN-IT code [3,9] initialization.…”

“…Quantum interference between RR and DR for highly-charged ions was first considered in [30]. In energy regions free from dielectronic resonances, PRR is the dominant process, where its main effect is the enhancement of the RR background [31,32]. Such non-resonance photon energy ranges for polarization of the n j shells may be written as:…”

“…The term σ prr was shown in [29,31,32] to be much less than σ rr , i.e., σ prr /σ rr 1. Therefore, it is the interference term σ int , which is responsible for the RRCS enhancement.…”
