Effect of Task-Based Mirror Therapy on Motor Recovery of the Upper Extremity in Chronic Stroke Patients: A Pilot Study

Abstract: The preliminary findings suggest that task-based MT is effective in improving wrist and hand motor recovery in chronic stroke patients. Further studies in the form of randomized trials are needed to validate its effectiveness.

“…By covering the affected side with a mirror so that the motion in the less affected side can be viewed through the mirror, mirror therapy induces a visual illusion that activates the damaged brain area and provides a sense of normal movement in the affected side (Ramachandran and Rogers-Ramachandran, 1996). In addition to promoting motor recovery in patients with stroke (Sutbeyaz et al, 2007;Yavuzer et al, 2008;Arya and Pandian, 2013), mirror therapy is known to be effective in reducing phantom sensations and pain caused by amputation, improving rehabilitation after hand surgery, and reducing pain from complex regional pain syndrome (McCabe et al, 2003;Rosen and Lundborg, 2005). Recent studies have shown that both task-oriented and bilateral arm training are effective additional therapeutic interventions for the recovery of upper extremity function in stroke patients (Oujamaa et al, 2009).…”

“…As terapias que envolvem a utilização de exercícios no espelho voltados para as atividades funcionais são mais eficazes nos ganhos motores, pois aplicam e reforçam os conceitos de aprendizagem motora. As atividades funcionais estão relacionadas à maior retenção do aprendizado motor, já que se aplica uma maior dinamicidade nas atividades, variação e treino voltado para tarefas específicas tornando mais fácil sua assimilação (Arya et al, 2013).…”
