Effect of Taurine and β-Alanine on Morphological Changes of Pancreas in Streptozotocin-Induced Rats

Abstract: In order to determine the effects of taurine supplementation or depletion on the morphological changes of pancreatic beta-cells in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed the purified diets supplemented with 1, 2 or 3% taurine or 5% beta-alanine in their drinking water for 7 weeks. After 3 weeks, diabetes was induced by streptozotocin injection (50 mg/kg body-weight). Pancreatic morphology was observed by transmission electron microscopy. The pancreatic beta-cell of the non-diab… Show more

“…Streptozotocin solution (0.5 %) was freshly prepared in ice cold sodium citrate buffer (0.1 M; pH 4.5) in a volume of 10 mg/ml and administered to overnight fasted wistar-rats intra-peritoneally at the dose of 55 mg kg -1 body-weight [31][32][33]. The rats were kept only on glucose solution (5 %) in drinking water for next 24 h after the STZ administration to prevent hypoglycemia [34,35].…”

“…Diabetes mellitus was induced in Wistar rats by single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50mg/kg bw) dissolved in 0.1M citrate buffer (pH 4.5) to overnight fasted Albino Wistar rats (Chang, 2000). The diabetes was assessed in streptozotocin induced rats by determining the blood glucose concentration, 48 hours after injection of streptozotocin.…”
