Effect of the heat treatment on corrosion and mechanical properties of CoCrMo alloys manufactured by selective laser melting

Abstract: PurposeThis study aims to focus on the heat treatment influence on the corrosion resistance, adhesion of Streptococcus mutans and mechanical properties of CoCrMo alloys manufactured by the selective laser melting (SLM). Design/methodology/approachCoCrMo alloys were manufactured using the Dimetal-100 machine. X-ray diffraction (XRD), metallographic analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical corrosion, Vickers microhardness and tensile tests were used to characterize SLM-produced CoCrMo alloy… Show more

“…The ultimate strength of the CoCr alloy formed by SLM is 1,282.7 6 10.1 MPa, the yield strength is 847.3 6 10.8 MPa and the elongation is 10.9 6 0.5%. These values are close to the data in other references (Lee et al, 2019;Béreš et al, 2018;Zhang et al, 2018a). Moreover, the ultimate strength of the CoCr alloy formed by SLM reached 1,395.3 6 53.0 MPa after the porcelain sintering treatment, the yield strength was 1,011.3 6 30.4 MPa and the elongation was 5.0 6 0.9%.…”

“…In addition, the fast scanning speed of the laser causes the powder to solidify very quickly after melting, so the sample formed by the SLM retains the g phase present at high temperatures. As described by Zhang et al, the g phase exists at high temperature, and « phase is the stable phase at normal temperature (Zhang et al, 2018a). However, after the sample was treated by porcelain sintering process, the g phase of the SLM-formed CoCr alloy sample was further converted into the « phase, and the « phase increased with the new peak corresponding to the 1010 plane.…”

“…A personalized femoral component of CoCrMo (CCM) with good exterior quality, mechanical property and biological corrosion resistance, obtained by the SLM process, was the achievement of the work proposed by Song (2016). Zhang (2018b) offered a comparison between SLM-produced CoCrMo alloys and the ones manufactured by casting under the ASTM F75 standard. The investigation focused on the heat treatment influence on the corrosion resistance, adhesion of streptococcus mutants and mechanical properties of the previously mentioned alloy.…”
