Effect of the Incorporation of PVC on the Mechanical Properties of the Jute-Reinforced LLDPE Composite

Abstract: Jute fabrics-reinforced linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) matrix composites (50 wt% fiber) were prepared by compression molding and mechanical properties were studied. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix was incorporated instead of LLDPE in the jute based composites and their mechanical properties were investigated and compared with the control composites. It was found that with the increase of PVC in the LLDPE based composites, the mechanical properties were found to improve significantly. Degradation tests… Show more

“…Researches on natural fiber reinforced synthetic polymer-based composites are going on. A good number of papers are already been published on jute fibers reinforced polypropylene, methyl methacrylate, polyethylene terephalate and polyvinyl chloride matrixbased composites [19][20][21][22][23] . But comparative studies of mechanical, degradation and interfacial properties between jute and E-glass fibers reinforced PVC matrix composites are not published elsewhere.…”

“…As a result, the hydrophilic nature of the fibers decreased drastically because of the coating of PP and PVC on the fibers inside the composites. During burial of the composites in the soil medium, microbial degradation took place and water might have entered from the edges of the composites and thus degraded the fibers slowly inside the composite [1].…”

“…In the modern world, composite materials play a vital role in the fabrication of construction materials, automobiles, naval parts, and many more. Early work on composites chiefly emphasized the synthetic matrix and reinforcement [1][2][3][4]. It is well established that the synthetic materials are good in mechanical properties and durability.…”

“…Composite materials are widely used all over the world in the manufacture of building materials, automobiles, naval parts and others. Composite materials consist of two constituents namely a matrix and reinforcement [1]. Synthetic materials have good mechanical properties and durability, but due to the environmental awareness, these materials have some criticisms because they are not easily biodegradable [2].…”
