Effect of the leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast on orthodontic tooth movement

Abstract: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease, and its prevalence is relatively high among children. Optimal management of asthma often requires longterm pharmacotherapy; however, the effects of these medications on orthodontic treatment is uncertain. We evaluated the effects of the leukotriene LTD 4 receptor antagonist montelukast on orthodontic tooth movement in an animal model. Eight mongrel dogs were given montelukast for periods up to 4 weeks. An orthodontic force of 150-200 g was applied to move the second an… Show more

“…There were no statistically significant differences between the 2 groups at baseline in terms of age ( t = 0.976, P = .332), education ( X 2 = 0.103, P = .950), marital status ( X 2 = 0.124, P = .725), TNM stage ( X 2 = 0.197, P = .906), and shoulder mobility ( t = −0.456, P = .649). [ 20 , 21 ] The observed differences were not statistically significant ( P > .05). The study received approval from the hospital ethics committee, and all patients or their family members provided signed informed consent forms.…”

“…Among the drugs used for its treatment are beta-2 agonists (salbutamol, formoterol), corticosteroids (beclomethasone, prednisone) and leukotriene receptor antagonists (zafirlukast, montelukast) [4]. Pharmacotherapy of asthma includes drugs that could affect orthodontic tooth movement [5]. Therefore, it is important to determine what is the role of these drugs to carry out treatment planning considering the possible changes that could occur due to the patient's condition.…”
