“…Samples composed of Zirconia (ZrO 2 )-toughened alumina composition (ZTA), where Zirconia was stabilized with 5 mol% yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3 ), were prepared using the following starting materials: Al 2 O 3 (99.98% purity, provided by Almatis Gmbh, Ludwigshafen, Germany), zirconium (IV) n-butoxide, and yttrium nitrate (made of yttria (Y 2 O 3 ) provided by Strem Chemicals, Newburyport, MA, USA). The synthesis of 5 mol% yttria (Y 2 O 3 )partially stabilized ZrO 2 (PSZ) was conducted according to reported procedures [24]. Briefly, 5 mol% Yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) was developed through hydrolysis of zirconium (IV)-n-butoxide (ZR, Stream Chemicals USA) and with the addition of yttrium nitrate (after the dissolution of yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3 ) in nitric acid HNO 3 ).…”

“…Zirconia- and alumina-based composite powders have been produced by several elaboration techniques, from the traditional milling–mixing [48,49,54] to wet chemical routes (such as alkoxide-based route [55], sol-gel [56,57,58,59,60], co-precipitation [61,62], and hydrothermal methods [63]).…”

“…A recent study of Naga [ 126 ] compares the microstructural development and mechanical properties of (Y,Ce)-ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 composites prepared by sol-gel and mechanical mixing methods. The results indicate that, due to the higher homogeneity achieved from the sol-gel technique, the sol-gel derived composite showed higher bulk density, lower apparent porosity and a finer microstructure with respect to the mechanically-mixed composite.…”
