Effect of the Stacking Sequence on the Impact Response of Carbon-Glass/Epoxy Hybrid Composites

Abstract: This paper investigates low-velocity impact response of Quasi Isotropic (QI) hybrid carbon/glass fiber reinforced polymer composites with alternate stacking sequences. Cross-ply woven carbon and glass fibers were used as reinforcing materials to fabricate sandwiched and interlayer hybrid composites. For comparison, the laminates containing only-carbon and only-glass fibers were also studied. Drop weight test was used to impact the samples. The images captured by a normal camera demonstrated that localized dama… Show more

“…The DIC measurements were able to follow the nonlinear slip distributions at a low slip magnitude as theoretically described in the literature 9,10,45 and obtained from the use of equation (3). After the debonding load has been reached, the slip distributions of the anchored CFRP-to-timber joints tended to a linear configuration that, as expected, is confirmed by the replacement of the displacements made and missed by the DIC technique.…”

“…The use of CFRP composites also allows us to increase the strength and stiffness of all elements of the timber construction. In addition, their good thermal and acoustic insulation and their non-corrosion properties, 2,3 makes the use of FRP composites on timber constructions a very good alternative to other conventional materials such as metals. 2 The externally bonded or the near surface mounted (NSM) are just some examples of techniques that have been used to repair ancient timber buildings.…”

“…Impact energy is absorbed, among other things, by the destruction mechanism [38]. In the case of laminated shells, the characteristic failure mechanism is matrix cracking, delamination, fibre/matrix debonding and a fibre breakage [39].…”

“…The energy absorption capacity is highly critical for many engineering applications and some investigations on the traditional composite materials and foams have already been conducted [23][24][25]. This feature is also one of the most significant properties of AMSFs and strongly depends on plateau behavior.…”
