Effect of the supplementation of virgin coriander seed oil on reducing reactivity in healthy women with sensitive skin: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled pilot clinical study

Abstract: Sensitive skin is a common condition that affects many people in the world, especially women. This syndrome is defined by the occurrence of unpleasant sensations such as stinging and burning in response to stimuli that should not normally provoke such sensations. Coriander seed oil (CSO) is a 100% virgin oil of coriander seeds and boasts a specific composition of fatty acids, mainly petroselinic acid (60–75%). It has demonstrated its ability to regulate inflammation (NF-κB pathway) and nociception (TRPA1 pathw… Show more

“…In cultured keratinocytes, downregulation of E-cadherin promoted various downstream age-spot processes: the secretion of melanocytic/inflammatory factors, melanogenesis, detained melanocyte dynamics and melanin-uptake. To find a solution that can upregulate E-cadherin expression, 32 ingredients, which are known to have efficacies on cell-cell-contact-related functions, were selected for the screening [32][33][34]. Among them, we identified Rosa multiflora fruit extract as a solution for upregulating E-cadherin in keratinocytes.…”

“…Among 211 ingredients of plant extracts, vegetable oils and chemical compounds, the ingredients were first selected based on efficacies of ingredients that promote cell adhesion, keratinocyte differentiation, or barrier function. Among them, 32 ingredients such as Rosa multiflora fruit extract, Calendula officinalis flower extract, Coriandrum sativum fruit extract and xylitol were selected and utilized for the screening [32][33][34][35]. Keratinocytes were seeded into a 12-well plate, at a cell density of 3 × 10 4 cells/well, and cultured for 48 h. Following that, individual ingredients (0.005%) diluted in dimethyl sulfoxide were added to the cells.…”

“…Proper identification of oleic/petroselinic acid is a significant challenge for scientists since these fatty acids differ in biological activities. For example, a recent clinical study confirmed that coriander seed oil (abundant in petroselinic acid) regulates human body inflammation and nociception and thus reduces reactivity in sensitive skin [223].…”
